The "Curator" of Mao Era Garbology

Biography - Kangrui (Kerry) Wang

Numismatist | Collector | IB Student | History Enthusiast

I am Kangrui (Kerry) Wang, the "curator" of Mao Era Garbology. I am an avid collector and history enthusiast, and in my works, as evident in Mao Era Garbology, I often interweave the two – exploring history through the lens of numismatic and exonumia collections. Since 2021, I have visited a plethora of antique markets and flea markets all over China in furthering the exploration of "Sinological Garbology" (the study of modern Chinese history via discarded materials, as proposed by Swedish sinologist Michael Schoenhals) and "Flea Market History". My collection now features a wide array of artifacts, from medals and orders of the Soviet Union to old Chinese publications from the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) to numismatics of Ancient Rome.

I am also an IB DP student (or "candidate" as per the jargon of "the establishment") who is taking DP History HL with a pathway focus on the Modern History of Europe (sections 14, 15, 16). Thus, there will be references to the IB History syllabus scattered in Mao Era Garbology as an allusion to my academic background, paying homage to concentrations such as "persuasion and coercion", "consolidation and maintenance of power", and "domestic/social/cultural policy" of World History Topic 10: Authoritarian States (20th Century) and "rectification", "transitions to socialism", "Sino-Soviet Split", "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution", and "Four Modernizations" of HL Asia section 14: The People's Republic of China (1949-2005).

Research Focus

My focus of study and research has so far been predominantly on the History of the International Communist Movement and its manifestations in different regions. Situated within this broad historiographical domain, I have produced and published articles regarding topics such as the analysis of the influences of the Soviet Union on the development of the Republic of China (RoC) and the People's Republic of China (PRC), the evaluation of the Three Major Antitheses (i.e., industrial-agricultural antithesis, urban-rural antithesis, and intellectual-physical labor antithesis) in contemporary Chinese society, and the evaluation of the success and limitations of the Meiji Restoration in the modernization of Japan. I am currently researching and in the process of developing an analytical essay evaluating the role of foreign intervention, namely that of the Comintern, in the causation of the Barcelona May Days in the Spanish Civil War (1937).
